What is Ritual Cacao? A Gentle Introduction to This Heart-Opening Practice

If you’ve ever attended a sound bath or explored holistic wellness practices, you may have come across ritual cacao; a powerful, natural way to support relaxation, emotional release, and deeper connection.
But what exactly is it?
Ritual cacao is pure, minimally processed cacao, traditionally used in ceremonial settings to open the heart and calm the mind. Unlike the hot chocolate we’re used to, this is cacao in its most natural form — rich in magnesium, antioxidants, and mood-enhancing compounds like theobromine that support both the body and nervous system.
Many people describe it as a natural alternative to coffee — but instead of creating a spike in energy, cacao works in a softer, more grounding way. It helps you slow down, feel more present, and gently connect back to yourself.
What Does Ritual Cacao Taste Like?
Ritual cacao has a deep, earthy flavour - more like dark, bitter chocolate than anything sweet or milky. It can be softened with a little honey, which brings warmth and balance to the experience.
I often drink cacao most in a lighter dose as a way to ground myself. But when prepared as ceremonial cacao, it becomes something more intentional, a doorway into a deeper, more reflective state.
The Benefits of Ritual Cacao
Ritual cacao is often used within sound healing, meditation, and wellness rituals because of its ability to support both the body and emotional state.
Some of the key benefits include:
Supporting relaxation and reducing stress
Enhancing mood and emotional openness
Helping you feel more grounded and present
Encouraging deeper connection during meditation or sound baths
Preparing the body to receive healing practices like sound therapy
It’s not about escaping how you feel - it’s about creating space to gently relax into an open your flow.
Why I Use Cacao in My Sound Baths
In my work with House of Butterfly, cacao is offered as part of a carefully held experience, whether that’s a local sound bath or a more intimate, one-to-one session.
Cacao helps you arrive.
It softens the nervous system, grounds your energy, and creates a sense of safety in the body. So when the sound begins - the crystal bowls, the frequencies, the stillness - you’re not just listening…
You’re receiving. I often feel so in flow after I've partaken in cacao and finished my sound bath that I find myself naturally swaying - that's how 'in flow' I am!
This is especially powerful in my 1:1 Resonance Ritual, (at your home or in your own space) where every element is designed to support deep rest and reconnection. The cacao becomes part of the ritual, a moment to pause, set an intention, and gently open yourself to the experience ahead.
In corporate settings, it offers something slightly different but equally important. For busy, high-performing teams, cacao helps shift people out of constant doing and into a more regulated, present state — making the sound bath far more impactful.
A Moment Just for You
Whether you experience cacao at home or as part of a guided session, it offers something simple but often missing in modern life:
A moment to slow down. To reconnect. To feel.
And from that place, everything else begins to shift.
